# Using an AED

An AED (Automated External Defibulator) is a tool used to read the heart rhythm of a patient in need. The AED will search for one of 2 shockable heart rhythms, V-Fib and V-Tach. When found the AED will tell you to shock the patient, momentarily stopping that persons heart giving it a chance to start beating correctly again.

Once you have shocked a patient you must immediately begin the steps of CPR starting with compressions. If done quickly and properly the chances of someone surviving increase greatly.

AED’s come in many different shapes, sizes and colors but are all used the same. You will follow the voice prompts and shock the patient when told to do so.

-   **Step 1:** Turn on the AED
-   **Step 2:** Attach pads to patient as shown on pads.
-   **Step 3:** Stand clear to let the AED anaylze and prepare to shock the patient if needed.
-   **Step 4:** Shock the patient and immediately begin CPR starting with compressions

The AED Course teaches the basic techniques of adult CPR and how to use an AED on a patient. Students also learn about using barrier devices in CPR and giving first aid for choking. The course teaches how to recognize the signs of four major emergencies: heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest and foreign-body airway obstruction.

Intended Audience  
Responders such as police, airline personnel, security personnel, corporate employees, family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death, other rescuers, and those who need or want to learn CPR and how to operate an AED.
